About the Area

Black Balsam Knob is located in the high mountains south of Asheville, NC, at the junction of the Pisgah Ridge and the Balsam range. Balds soaring to more than 6000 ft. in elevation, coupled with
wide open views owing to the area’s uncharacteristic lack of trees makes the area extremely scenic and popular.

Black Balsam Knob is located about 27 miles south of Asheville, off of FS Road 810 at milepost 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Just before this turn is the Graveyard Fields overlook, another popular parking area in the vicinity. The trail to Black Balsam Knob starts halfway to the end of FS 816, and there are more trails accessible from the parking area at the end of the road.
