Late summer in the high mountains of Western North Carolina near the Blue Ridge Parkway features ripening blueberries, distinctive wildflowers, Mountain Ash berries and the first hints of fall colors. While the views from the Parkway overlooks are spectacular in themselves, hikers can enjoy a wider variety of scenery accessible only on foot.
We hiked the Art Loeb Trail to Black Balsam Knob and the Sam Knob trail to find these splendid mountain scenes.
